Ondo 2020 Guber polls: INEC sets deadline for party primaries

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended registration of new voters ahead of the October 10, 2020 governorship election in Ondo state; SUNSHINETRUTH can authoritatively report.

This is just as the Commission has set July 25 as the deadline for all the eighteen registered political parties to conclude their primaries for the election.

Addressing a stakeholders meeting in Akure on the publication of “Notice of Election”, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ambassador Rufus Akeju said there would be no continuous voters registration (CVR) and distribution of Permanent Voters Card (PVCs) in the state again before the governorship poll.

Akeju said, “It is extremely important for me to inform you that the Commission has suspended the Continuous Voter Registration exercise and the implication is that, the window of Opportunity for new registrants to register, distribution of Permanent Voter Cards, transfer of registration and replacement of lost or defaced PVCs etc has been shut for the meantime owing to the ravaging
pandemic.

“Before I conclude, it is pertinent for me to remind you once again about the registration status of the state as follows: (i) No of Registered Voters 1,822 346; (ii) No of PVCs collected 1,478,460 and (iii) No of uncollected PVCs 372,888,” Akeju said.

Akeju said, “For the avoidance of doubt, section 78(7) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) empowers INEC to de-register political parties In carrying out this Constitutional responsibility, the Commission has de-registered Seventy-four (74) political parties and now left with Eighteen (18) subsisting political parties in the political space of the country.

“In accordance with the election timetable released by INEC for the conduct of gubernatorial election in Ondo State, the conduct of the political party primaries shall take place between Thursday, 2nd July, and Saturday, 25th.

“Pursuant to the above, and also as political activities begin to gather momentum in the state, I hereby admonish the political actors and gladIators to live up to expectations, Play the game according to the dIctate of the extant laws, regulations and guidelines of their political parties to promote democratic values.

“They should endeavour at all times to be gwded by the ethics of democratic norms and ensure they order their conduct to sustain and build the integrity of the electoral process.

“Before I conclude, it is pertinent for me to remind you once agaIn about the registration status of the state as follows: (i) No of Registered Voters 1,822 346; (ii) No of PVCs collected 1,478,460 and (iii) No of uncollected PVCs 372,888.”

“In compliance with section 30(1) of the electoral act 2010 (as amended), and also in conformity With the scheduled election timetable for Ondo State gubernatorial election, the Independent National Electoral Commission in Ondo State has posted the Notice of Election” today, Wednesday 1st July, 2020 as required by law.

“This notice could be seen at the State Office. in Alagbaka, Akure and all the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) 0f the state,” Akeju said.
