In what looks like a scam over the recent defection of some politicians from the APC to the PDP, a big scandal has rocked the corridors of power in Ondo state as a serving Commissioner who had initially planned to defect with the Ondo State deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, refused to fulfill his promise and failed to resign his appointment.
It was learnt that the Commissioner (name withheld) who is from Ondo central senatorial district shunned the official defection of the Deputy Governor and some former commissioners at the PDP state secretariat despite promising to join the movement with his supporters.
SUNSHINETRUTH also gathered that the National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus was said to have been allegedly disappointed for not seeing some state APC lawmakers as well as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ifedayo Abegunde (aka Abena) and few commissioners with their supporters he was told they would also defected to his party.
As at the time of filing in this report, it was not clear why the “political bigwigs” shunned the PDP programme on Monday, as there was no serving political office holders defected with the Deputy Governor on Monday.
Although it was learnt that some of the serving political appointees who wished to go with Agboola purportedly assured him that they would only join him when he picks the PDP gubernatorial ticket.
The lawmakers who had promised to joined the PDP from the APC were afraid that their seats may be declared vacant while the Commissioner/other political appointees don’t want to leave certainty for uncertainty.
A reliable source said, “interestingly, the said commissioner who is from one of the local Government areas in Ondo Central senatorial district, (allegedly) collected the sum of N8 million as part of efforts to mobilise his supporters ahead of the Monday programme that was presided over by the PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus who came to Akure to receive the deputy governor.
The source close to the Deputy Governor who expressed regrets over the failure of the Akeredolu’s Commissioner, saying, “the activities of the political class wondered what the future holds for the nation if persons who are supposed to have integrity behave in very funny ways.
“This country is in a mess and since my association with the political class, I have seen a lot of things.
“But what baffles me is that which just occured a few days to the defection. This particular Commissioner and the deputy Governor were all meeting and in fact, were to defect same day.
“The plan was that on Sunday evening, the man (commissioner) would tender his letter of resignation and proceed with the deputy to the PDP secretariat for the formal declaration.
“But the surprising thing is not just his refusal to drop his letter a planned; it was his refusal to even pick several calls to him (by the new PDP entrants). Funny enough, at the time we were preparing for the event, the commissioner who had not called Aketi for a long time, put a call across to him to deceive him as if he is clean.”
Speakibg at Akure event, Secondus who said he expected more APC chieftains in his PDP ahead of the governorship polls, promised that there would be no imposition of candidate for the polls, the party’s July 22 primaries would be conducted in a transparent and credible manner.
The National Chairman commended the courage of Agboola for leaving ruling APC to join forces with the PDP to unseat the governing party.
Agboola declared that his coming to the PDP was to add values to the party as an incumbent Deputy Governor.
However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) had described as annoying the continuous stay in office of Hon Agboola Ajayi as the Ondo State Deputy Governor, advising him to resign honourably.
In a Press Statement signed by Alex Kalejaye, the state Publicity Secretary of the party, APC stated that the development is worrisome and unfortunate that the journey commenced in one accord between the APC and Agboola few years back could go awry this soon.
APC said “the State Working Committee is taken aback by a reported statement credited to Hon. Ajayi that he would remain the Deputy Governor as long as his people have not asked him to quit. This statement is vexatious.
