The Campaign Organisation of a frontline Governorship Aspirant of the APC, Chief Olayide Adelami has alleged the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO), Owo Division-one of the Nigeria Police Force, SP Akingbehin Akinwumi, of leading some police officers and suspected “Aketi boys” loyal to the Special Assistant to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on Natural Resources, Mr Fatai Lawal, to attack the Owo residential area of Adelami today as preparations for the July 20 party’s primary draws nearer.
Both Akeredolu and Adelami both Owo local government kinsmen, are both vying for the APC gubernatorial ticket.
The alleged attack was reportedly carried out for hours with sporadic shooting of gun fire at; No 1, Adelami street, off Isuada road, Iselu-Owo by the suspected political thugs.
A press statement signed by Rahaman A. Yusuf, the media Aide to Adelami, indicates that security men attached with the Aspirant however prevented the DPO team from attacking his residence.
The statement reads, “the attack, which was foiled by men of the Nigerian Police Force stationed at the residence of Chief Adelami saw the DPO in one hilux van, an armoured personnel carrier, some Aketi branded vehicles and motorcycles carrying known thugs and cult members brandishing guns and other harmful weapons advance on the house from different directions.
“Some of the boys were seen buying petrol with gallons at the filling station by the house while some were shouting that the building be razed.
“It is a shame that the Nigerian Police Force, Ondo state command, will allow itself to be used by the governor to oppress and intimidate his opponents in a manner that makes one wonder if the Ondo State command of the Nigerian Police is an arm of Akeredolu’s government.”
Adelami called on the Inspector General of police (IGP) to investigate unlawful activities of policemen in Owo and the state ahead of the October 10 governorship election.
“We hereby call on the Inspector General of police to, as a matter of utmost urgency, look into the activities of the police in Ondo state before to avoid further threat to peace and stability in the state.
“It is on record that the Adelami Campaign Organization and the ÓLàmìLaaka family have remained committed to peace and decorum in the face of all these unwarranted provocations and attacks and will continue to be,” Adelami said.
When contacted on telephone for reaction by newsmen, the Spokesman of the Ondo state Police Command, Mr Tee-Leo Ikoro who denied the allegation against the DPO, said policemen were at the scene to restore peace when the two sides were engaging in bloody clash.
The PPRO said no arrest had been made due to heavy shooting of gunfire by the suspected political thugs.
Also reacting, the leader of APC members under the Owo Youths Redemption Group (OYRG), Olayemi Olamide denied the allegation, adding that it was Adelami’s thugs who attacked them at Igboroko in Owo where they were holding meeting.
The group leader Olamide who is loyal to Akeredolu, narrated the incident said; “at about 2pm around Igboroko here, we were holding our meeting as a group to declare our total support for the re-election of Governor Akeredolu when these thugs brandishing sophisticated weapons such as guns , axes and cutlasses arrived at the theatre of crime in two vans and a white pick up.”
