Guber Polls: Tension over move to pick Ondo Dep Governor as PDP Consensus Candidate

By: Oluwatosin Adesola

Report says the Ondo State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is currently under intense pressure from its governorship aspirants as a result of rumour that there is a plot to adopt the state Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi as the consensus candidate of the party for the October 10 election in the state.

According to the speculation, the 2016 governorship Candidate of the PDP in the state, Eyitayo Jegede is being considered as Agboola’s running mate.

Report says Agboola has perfected plans to dump his boss Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu as well as the ruling APC and return to the PDP to contest the gubernatorial polls.

There are strong indications that some PDP governors from the South south and Northwest are working for the Agboola, though the claimed is yet to be confirmed.

The rumour that started spreading like wildfire at the weekend and created tension among the stakeholders, has however forced the party’s Secretariat to deny the speculation as unfounded.

In a Press Statement issued by the ondo state chapter of the PDP, the party said six aspirants had obtained its nomination form and there was nothing like consensus candidacy.

“GUBERNATORIAL ASPIRANTS UPDATE: The following are ASPIRANTS on the platform of the PDP who have also approached the State Secretariat to pay for and collect the *CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE & INTRODUCTION LETTER* to confirm their intention to seek the mandate of the PDP to be considered for election as GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATE;

“(1) Hon Bode Ayorinde (ACHIEVERS); (2) Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA); (3) Hon Banji Ben Okunomo (BBO); (4) Mr. Eyitayo Jegede SAN; (5) Prince Godday Erewa and (6) Olorogun Eddy Olafeso.

Ondo PDP said “this information is given for record purposes and in the chronology of their visitation to the secretariat and to assure all aspirants that the party will not disregard their long standing efforts at building the party and does not intend in any way to provide unfair advantages to any aspirant.

“The allegations that the Deputy Governor, Mr Agboola Ajayi has been considered as the candidate of the PDP is totally untrue and should be disregarded. Our party is totally committed to the conduct of a free, fair, open and transparent gubernatorial primary.”

RE: PDP GIVES DEPUTY GOVERNOR ANOTHER CONDITION.

The attention of Eyitayo Jegede SAN campaign Organisation has been drawn to a sponsored story in the Nation Newspaper (via its online platform) written by one Osagie Otabor and posted on the 14th of June 2020 which alleged that arrangements have been made for Mr. Eyitayo Jegede SAN to run as a Deputy to Mr. Agboola Ajayi, a member of the APC.

The fake story, where a reference was also made to an unknown southwest officer of the party is nothing but a product of a wicked figment of the writer’s imagination.

For the records, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede SAN has been a loyal member of the PDP whose dedication to the party is without fault and does not intend, either now or in the future to become a Deputy to Mr. Ajayi. The aspiration of Mr. Eyitayo Jegede SAN predates the emergence of Mr. Ajayi as a Deputy to the incumbent APC governor and is an aspiration that carries the spirit of every PDP member who has remained loyal and has laboured for the continuity of this party against the consequences of the actions of those who worked against our party’s victory in the last election.

We take note of the attempt to misinform the general public and create acrimony within our party and urge all members to disregard the fictitious and maliciously intentioned story.

Our party remains committed and has assured all aspirants of free and fair primaries. Therefore, our principal and gubernatorial aspirant will participate in the primaries with the full intention of winning as leading the party into victory at the polls.

We know the source of the story and we have chosen to ignore them as we keep towards ensuring the victory of our aspirant and party in the next election.

Eyi N’bo!

Thank you
