As part of his philanthropic gesture towards the fight against the Covid-19 in Ondo State, Nigerian business mogul and politician, Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim (CFR), has donated N40Million to the state Government, advising governor oluwarotimi to stop constructing road and bridges and focus on tackling the coronavirus.

Ibrahim, who presented the cheque to the state Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, on Thursday, at the Government House, Alagbaka, Akure, said the state must as a matter of urgency declare the Covid-19 as a mega project with strategic plans to prevent the spread.

The Igbotako born politician said the lockdown period is just for Government to work out comprehensive plans for the citizenry.

Ibrahim commended the Ondo state Government for various steps taken so far to curb the spread of the Pandemic in the state.

According to him, the current approach of the Government in tackling the spread of the disease should be replicated in all the eighteen Local Government areas of the state.

“We want the government to identify private hospitals in the local government that could test patients.

“I will suggest we consider COVID-19 a mega project. Identify reasonable well set up private hospital to make them part of centre for testing. If the patients are positive, they could be referred for treatment.

“Declare in cabinet that COVID-19 is a mega project. You will construct bridges and roads and nobody to use them after losing 50 percent of the population. You better not construct the roads and save the citizens.

“What is key in COVID-19 is data but we don’t have those data. What is key to management of epidemics is data. How can we have the data if those centres are not available at the local level. These centres will be able to handle data of those with symptoms.

“As NICON Group, we are looking at how to help six states in the country but charity begins at home.”

The businessman assured the Governor of total support while hoping that the people will be fair enough to appreciate the efforts of the Governor so far.

Responding, Governor Akeredolu appreciated the gesture while assuring that the money will be spent judiciously on the fight against Covid-19.

The Governor called on the people to ensure that the protocol established are followed by regularly washing their hands and applying sanitizers.

Akeredolu said the Government will explore the idea of having testing centers in all Local Governments.

He also commended Dr Jimoh Ibrahim for his love for Ondo state with the establishment of the first private in the southern senatorial district of the state.

The Governor informed that the state has established isolation center in the three senatorial districts of the state, adding that the State will also consider the suggestion of Jimoh Ibrahim by involving big private hospitals at the local governments.

Explaining why he declared dusk – to-dawn curfew, Governor Akeredolu said:”We have a problem that there could be community spreading. Some people prefer beer drinking to their lives. They filled the beer parlors at night and risk spreading potential and that’s why we declared the curfew.’

“There are reason we take all these actions. We don’t just wake up and issue directives. We are worried about the lives of our people. There is nothing wrong with staying at home for now. We are determined to do our best and work for our dear state.” Akeredolu said.
