ONDO NUJ DONATES TO CHILDREN HOME

As part of activities lined up for the 2019 Press Week in Ondo State, members of the Pen Profession today visited the State Children Home Oba-Ile to donate materials for the upkeep of the children.

Led by the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Mr. Tona Aderoboye, the union presented items like packs of indomie, detergents, toiletries among others.

Explaining the purpose of the visit to the management of the home, Adetona stated that it is an annual social responsibility of the union to celebrate the Press Week with the less privileged ones in the society.

He added that, the union decided to complement the effort of the state government in raising the motherless children in order to make them know that they are not neglected by the society.

According to him, the children are innocent special gifts from God that need not to be abandoned for government alone, noting that if they were well taken care of, they would also make impact in life, hence the reason the union extend a hand of love to them.

Responding on behalf of the Ministry of Women Affairs, a Social Worker at the Children Home, Mrs. Anamebom Hellen, appreciated the gesture and prayed for the growth of NUJ in the state.

The 2019 Press Week celebration continues tomorrow with a lecture and investiture of the state governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, as the grand patron of the union.

Thanks NUJ for always supporting the home, and wish the union progress, prayed for the children of the members.

CLERGYMAN TASKS JOURNALISTS OVER POLITICIANS

Journalists have been charged to dig deep into the project Nigeria so that the best leader can emerge rather than praise singing politicians during the discharge of their professional duties.

Founder of C & S church, Success Gate, Primate Ademisokun-Turton declared this in his sermon at the thanksgiving service to mark the 2019 Ondo NUJ Press Week .

At the well attended thanksgiving service held at the church headquarters, Turton said Nigerians have much confidence in journalists than politicians.

He said it is journalists who can breed the messiah Nigerians needed through their balanced and deep reportage .

“Nigerians cannot look at anybody now and call him Messiah irrespective of tribe. People don’t believe anybody anymore, but you can help us to bring out the appropriate leader through your deep reportage. “

The cleric who charged journalists to always speak out the truth submitted that Nigeria need it now more than any other thing.

“Nigeria need the press more than any other thing now, we even need the press more than the politicians.

On the penalty for hate speech, Ademisokun-Turton said any penalty on hate speech will backfire on the lawmaker, saying nothing is hate speech in a democracy.

He however advised journalists to shun the practice of yellow journalism by blackmailing people because they want to become rich, saying such practice is sheer wickedness and ungodly.

“Don’t blackmail people because you want to become rich, some orchestrate what does not happen at all. NUJ should set up disciplinary committee for its members like NBA, NMA and others.”

Earlier, Ondo State chairman of NUJ, Comrade Tona Aderoboye said the state parades most competent and responsible journalists that do not compromise professionalism.

He said members of the pen profession have reasons to thank God for the year running out as he submitted that no casualty was recorded. The Hope.
