The circumstances that led to the untimely death of a Proprietress of popular Ondo state-based secondary school, Dr (Mrs) Comfort Onobhume have started generating controversies.
One Dr Fakunle (the Managing Director) and his staff at DELIGHT HOSPITAL & FERTILITY CENTRE, Ibadan, the Oyo state capital were alleged of committing medical negligence and professional misconducts that led to the death of a 60year-old Mrs Onobhume on the 13th of August, 2019 when the hospital’s medical team carried out double major operations on the deceased.
The hospital is located at No. 1, Emmanuel Close Tomori Street, Bolumole Area, Eleweura, Challenge, Ibadan, Oyo state while Mrs Onobhume was the Proprietress of GREAT CORNERSTONE INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE COLLEGE, Agbaluku, Arigidi Akoko, Ondo State.
The deceased had been suffering from infertility until when she met Dr Fakunle who managed the pregnancy from gestation to delivery stage.
In two separate petitions dated 16th September, 2019, by the family members, students and staff of the college and submitted to the Inspector General of Police and the Registrar of Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and a copy made available to newsmen in Akure, the Ondo state capital, Dr Fakunle and other medical staff of the hospital were alleged to have unprofessionally performed two major surgical operations (Caesarean Section, CS and Fibroid) simultaneously on late Comfort Onobhume which led to internal bleeding.
“That the management of Delight Hospital claimed that she died of acute respiratory distress, but the result of an autopsy conducted at Federal Medical Center Owo shows that she died of internal bleeding, about 3 and half liters of blood found in her abdomen, the autopsy also shows that her body was pale, no blood was found in her body, all the blood that supposed to be in her body system, stored in her abdomen.”
In the petitions written by her lawyer, Barrister Ojo Ayodele and jointly signed by Husband, Mr Sunday Onobhume, as well as 135 family members, staff, students, old students, parents and friends of the deceased, they prayed that the Inspector General of Police should arrest Dr Fakunle, Dr Okoh, two nurses and other Doctors that performed the operations on Mrs Onobhume at the fertility Centre and prosecute them in law court.
The petitioners also said, “that we want you Sir, to use your good office to investigate this matter on its merit against the erring doctors Dr. Fakunle, Dr. Okoh, the two nurses and other doctors that performed the operation with him on late Comfort Onobhume at Delight Hospital & Fertility Centre, Ibadan.
“Also the Inspector general of Police and MDCN should close down Delight Hospital & Fertiiity Centre, Ibadan immediately pending the determination of this matter, as the hospital is a threat to human life.
“And (MDCN) should equally remove the name of Dr. Fakunle, Dr. Okoh, the two nurses and other doctors who participated in this deadly act of gross professional misconduct from
the Iist/names of practising doctors in Nigeria as the law is no respecter of anybody be you principality or whatsoever.”
The petitions read, “that Dr. Fakunle and his cohorts operated late Comfort Onobhume and the baby was delivered successfully, instead of them to stop there. they later went and operate late Comfort Onobhume that same day for fibroid a non life threatening disease on a woman of 60 years old.”
“That late Comfort Onobhume spent a lot of money not less than 6 Million Naira and above on this project/pregnancy at Delight Hospital & Futility Centre. That she usually pay N40,000 (Forty Thousand Naira) and above whenever she had an appointment with Dr. Fakunle every two weeks. That the photocopy of the cash receipt issued by Dr. Fakunle showing this evidence of payment is hereby attached.”
“That Dr. Fakunle ought not to have carried out the second operation, fibroid, after he had carried out the first one successfully by bringing out the baby boy.
“That in the second operation which he did with his cohorts to operate fibroid, they would have to out big vascular muscle which will lead to excessive loss of blood and bleeding on the part of the patient while the first operation for delivery will only lead to little loss of blood.
That after the second operation, late Comfort Onobhume started fuming in her mouth and she died within 15 hours to 16 hours after the operation.”
The lawyer Ayodele said in the petition “that after the death of late Comfort Onobhume the management of Delight Hospital & Fertility Centre quickly issued a Death Certificate signed by one Dr. Okoh of the same hospital within few hours after her death in order to cover up for the heinous crime that they have committed.
“That no test was carried out on the corpse of late Comfort Onobhume and a certificate was issued. This is criminal.
“That the Managing Director of Delight Hospital & Fertility Centre and his cohorts negligently killed/murdered late Comfort Onobhume whom they own a duty of care to as their patient and that duty was breached which now resulted into her death.
“That Dr. Fakunle and his cohorts ought not to have carried out two major surgical operations on a 60-year old woman considering her age but the Doctor did it for money.
“That these doctors were negligent in their duty as operation no longer kill people in Nigeria during delivery.
“That Doctor Fakunle and his cohorts made mistake by not closing the womb and every other part he operated/opened very well which made late Comfort Onobhume to bleed to death.
“That there are CCTV cameras in the hospital that we humbly apply that the CCTV camera of 12-14/8/2019 when late Comfort Onobhume arrived at the hospital and when she died be retracted in the interest of justice,” the Petitioner said.
