There is hope for the people of communities in Ondo south senatorial district of Ondo state who are experiencing total blackout for over eleven years, as the federal government has vowed that electricity will be fully restored to the area in the sixty days.
The Executive Director of the government-owned Niger-Delta Power Holding Company, Engineer Ife Oyedele gave this indication while speaking with newsmen at a Tenure Completion Thanksgiving of former Senator representing Ondo south, Yele Omogunwa held in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
The Thanksgiving was also attended by the Ondo state Chairman of the ruling APC, Engr Ade Adetimehin, former Deputy governor, Ali Olanusi and other members of the political class and traditional rulers.
Engineer Oyedele noted that contrary to rumour that the president Muhammadu Buhari’s administration had abandoned the restoration project, government’s contractors were working round the clock to ensure Ondo south enjoys stable and lasting electricity in the next two months.
The Executive Director noted that government had been busy repairing electricity facilities in all the communities in Odigbo, Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ese-odo and Irele local government areas of the state, adding that once the repair of the second major transformer that bring light from Ondo town, electricity would be finally restored to the affected areas.
Engineer Oyedele assured the people of Ondo south that President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo were committed to the completion of electricity restoration project and the 122KV line that was being financed by the NDDC from Omotosho power plant to Ode-Erinje to permanently solve problem of power supply in the district.
Engr Oyedele explained that, “under the past administration of Goodluck Jonathan, people of Ondo south were in total darkness for eleven years, the past government privatized the power sector totally to Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and I could restore the light to Ondo south due to breakdown of facilities, but out of love for our people in Ondo south, President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said, it is unacceptable for a section of the country to be total darkness for such long period and mandated us (NDPH) to intervene.”
After doing all the reticulation of electricity facilities in all the communities in Odigbo, Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ese-odo and Irele local government areas of the state, there is no way all these communities can be fed from one single transformer in Ondo town, so what we are doing now is to repair the second transformer that bring light from Ore to Ondo and the second transformer will be brought back to the network.”
“For like 10years without power supply, many electricity facilities such as cable has been stolen, poles destroyed and various transformers in towns have broken down, all these we have been fixing.”
He said, “It is unfortunate that some elements are carrying rumour that the federal government has abandoned the restoration of electricity to ondo south, go there now, our men (federal agents) are working every day to fully meet people’s expectations.”
“President Muhammadu Buhari is running a very serious administration and is not in the business of playing pranks with our people, for me am from a well-known family in Ondo south, I can never deceive my people, even we didn’t win presidential election in the district but we have continue to work to fulfill our promise of restoring power to Ondo south and any part of the country that have similar challenges.”
The Executive Director opined that, “Within the next 60days, two months the restoration of power to Ondo south should be achieved, I can assure you. Am from that place, I have a home in the place, as a man of honour my father was a very very known community leader in the area, am honestly committed to this.”
“Our contractors are moving round the areas, we are serious with what we are doing, we want a lasting restoration of electricity to the areas, when we eventually switch on the light, you will see how we have replaced some shameful equipment at (power) substaion at Okitipupa, we have brought new 33KVA panel from our store in Lagos and replacing the damaged equipment.”
“We thank God that we have a President and government that are very committed to the welfare of our people, continue to give us support (on Ondo south electricity restoration).”
“So, I want to assure the people of Ondo south senatorial district that work is going on the power issue, and by the time they have their power supply restored, they will be proud of the present administration (of President Buhari).”
“We have not abandoned the site contrary to rumour, we are working at the site, you see our contractors on the site, we are working to ensure that the people are not shortchanged.”
Oyedele said, “and in actual fact, my organization with the assistance of the Vice President and myself, we are working seriously to ensure that 122KV line that is being financed by the NDDC from Omotosho (power plant) to Ode-Erinje is completed too. The dissolution of NDDC Board caused slight delay in the project but the Vice President had intervened and we are working also to ensure that project is also completed because we do realise that Ondo south senatorial district is the major economic zone of Ondo state.”
