Sunshine Stars of Akure on sunday defeated Niger Tornadoes of Minna one goal to zero to move up to sixth position on the league table.

Chibundu Amah’s fifth goal of the season secured a 1-0 win for Sunshine Stars in a pulsating Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) week 19 game with Niger Tornadoes at Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure.

The striker pounced on a Fuad Ekelojuoti’s cross in the 66th minute to secure the win that moved the coach Kabiru Dogo’s charges up to 6th on the log with three round of matches to go in the championship.

Goalkeeper, Ayo Ojo was restored to the starting line up in place of Henry Ayodele as Dogo kept faith with the entire outfield players that started in Thursday’s hardly-deserved narrow loss at Remo Stars.

The hosts started Sunday’s contest on the driving seat and almost made their dominance count in the opening 15 minutes through Chigozie Obasi who had two goal-bound fierce low drives kept out by Aliko Mustapha.

Sunshine continued to lay siege to the visitors area and in the 35′ Obasi again was denied alongside Anthony Omaka with decisive blocks from the Ikon Allahs during a goalmouth scuffle, while the later headed wide narrowly a minute later from a cross.

Two minutes after the restart Omaka found the net with a header from Kolade Adeniji’s cross, but the home faithful had their celebrations cut short as the goal was chalked off for offside.

Nevertheless there was no denying the home crowd in the 66th minute as Amah made a timely run to tap home a low cross from Ekelojuoti and break the deadlock.

The advantage could have been doubled five minutes later, but Aliko again made a top of the drawer save to keep out Adeniji’s rocket free kick before stopping Amah off the rebound.

Ekelojuoti had the chance to cap his impressive outing on the day with a goal, however the winger fired inches high from just inside the area against the run of play 14 minutes before the game was brought to an end.

With the win Sunshine Stars have now amassed 26 points from 19 matches in the abridged campaign and the Akure Landlords will next make a long trip to the Northwest for a midweek clash with Katsina United.
