Youths and some electricity consumers at Ibulesoro community in Ifedore local government area of Ondo State have staged a peaceful protest against what they described as alleged extortion by Officials of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC.
The youths took their protest to the community’s palace where the monarch addressed them.
The irate youths who carried various placards on major roads at the community, expressed grievances over outrageous billing by BEDC.
Addressing the protesters, the regent, Princess Moyinoluwa Falowo expressed dismay over the BEDC officials’ indiscriminately charged every house between #3000 and #5000.
According to her, many of the houses being charged have no electricity bills or any document showing evidence of payment.
Princess Falowo said “my people are not happy. An item was stolen from the community transformer and we have blackout for days. Aside that, the amount we pay for electricity is very high and outrageous.
“The funniest thing is that most of the houses paying this outrageous fee don’t have electricity bill. They just come according to their moods, they ask for minimum of between #3000 and #5000 from every house. They (BEDC) threatened my people of disconnection if they fail to pay. So People have no confidence in the system”.
The Regent said, “My People are clamouring for prepaid meters because that is the only thing that will give us confidence in the system. We need prepaid meters and pending the time when the prepaid meters will be maid available ,we want every house in ibule community to have bills”.
“For those houses that have meters, the amounts they pay should be the same with the amount of Watts used on the meters. We want government to intervene. People just pay electricity bills without confidence”, she said.
Princess Falowo also called on the BEDC to urgently fix the cables allegedly stolen by unknown robbers as ibule community had been in darkness.
