A jilted husband, Deji Adenuga who set a family of nine ablaze at Igbodigo in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State has confessed to the crime, alleging that his estranged wife, Titilayo Shanumi aborted his four months- pregnancy without his consent.
Speaking with newsmen in Yoruba language when he was paraded at the Police State Headquarters in Akure, the suspected murderer from Ode-Erinje town in the state, said he decided to set ablaze the family house because his ex-wife ran away with his pregnancy and money totalling fifty-five thousand naira.
The 45year-old Deji Adenuga who however regretted that such number of casualties were lost in the incident, said he only intended burning down only the house to avenge his estranged wife’s actions of aborting his four months pregnancy and collecting his money and later cut off their relationship.
The suspect was arrested few days ago in Ijebu Ode, Ogun state, was convicted in year 2012 for killing his first wife (Abiye) but regained his freedom from Olokuta prison, Akure through a prerogative of mercy.
Paraded before journalists at the headquarters of the Police command in Akure, the state capital, the suspect explained that his estranged girlfriend and her sister, identified as Jumoke (now late) had been extorting money from him for a long time.
He explained that he and Titi had been living like a husband and wife since last year, saying the disagreement began when his ex-lover collected money from him to start a business but she squandered it and terminated her four-month pregnancy.
He added that they had taken each other to the Police station for settlement on many occasions.
He narrated, “What actually happened was that she (Titi) aborted the four-month pregnancy that she had for me while we were dating each other.
“We have been having issues in recent times and I have spent much money on her.
“I gave her the sum of N30,000 to do petty trading as she sells sachet water.
“Later, I gave her another sum of N25,000 to keep for me, making it N55,000, but I think she spent the money lavishly because she was staying with me.
“While she was staying with me, her elder sister, Jumoke, used to collect money from me. I later discovered that they were extorting me. I went to the Police station to report what she and her elder sister were doing to me, but the Police saw it as a small issue that could be resolved amicably”.
“After we left the Police station, they began to abuse me and made jest of me, saying I am a failure and not even a man for dragging them to the Police station.
“In fact, they threatened me. They said they would deal with me and even kill me if I did not desist from reporting them on the street. I now see those words as big threats. So I believe I had to act fast before they carried out their threats”, Adenuga said.
Parading three suspected kidnappers and ATM fraudster, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Undie Adie, said the command would charge the suspects to Court for proper prosecution.
Other suspects include cousins from Nasarawa state Mumini Muhammodu and Seidu Muhammodu for alleged kidnapping in Akoko area and an ATM syndicate who had been allegedly defrauding bank customers.
